E's Arrival

**ALERT-LABOR AND DELIVERY DETAILS AHEAD.  PICTURES AT THE END :) *

labor all began (sort of ) when I was just shy of 36 week pregnants.  i had been contracting quite a bit since 24 weeks, but no signs of preterm labor so i was not concerned.  on the morning of april 3rd i was having mild contractions every 3-5 minutes and a little bit of nausea.  i was scheduled to see my partner for a regular appointment a few days later so we opted to bump it up.  i was super shocked when she checked my cervix and said that i was 4cm dilated!  we decided to cancel my afternoon appointments and after i finished the morning, i could simply go home and rest.  by the time noon came, my contractions had picked up a bit so she rechecked and said i was between a 4 and 5 and his head was lower than before.  we went to the hospital thinking he was on his way.  alas, he stayed put like a good boy!  i was so relieved.  i spent the next week and a half taking it easy, working part time, and just trying to get to full term.  success!
2 weeks later on 4/18 i did a quick ultrasound on myself (job perk!) and noticed that the amniotic fluid level was really low.  this was confirmed and the decision was made to induce labor.  i called my hubby, picked up my daughter, waited for childcare to arrive for sweet L, and headed to the hospital around 6pm.
we started antibiotics and just a little bit of pitocin to get contractions started.  i needed 4 hours of antibiotics before my water was broken.  i went ahead and got my epidural and was 5cm dilated before we had done much of anything. we had one little scary minute when my nurse came into reposition me and then asked my family to step out.  i started paying attention at this point and realized that my little guy's heart rate had dropped.  She called for terbutaline to stop my contractions and asked them to page my doctor.  My nurse broke my water during all of the commotion to place an internal heart rate monitor and we realized that I had quickly changed to 7cm and his head had moved down.  Thankfully after five LONG minutes of his heart rate being in the 60's, it returned to normal.  We gave him a 30 minute breather before restarting pitocin, but the terbutaline worked SO well that it took a couple of hours to get contractions going again.  At midnight the contractions had just become regular, and my cervix remained unchanged.  Silver lining is that this meant his birthday would be 4/19 which I thought was fun since Lofton is 5/19.  My nurse came back in at 1:15 and asked if I felt pressure.  I told her just a little bit, but when she checked my cervix it was baby time!  Dr. Holt came in and asked me to do a practice push before she got all ready for delivery.  I started to take a deep breath and she said, "whoa, nevermind.  don't move until i get ready."  1 and a half contractions later at 1:39am, my precious baby boy was here and perfect in every way.   Everything was so smooth and easy that it was totally surreal.  Recovery was a breeze and 24 hrs later I was ready to go home.  Little did I know that on our first night home, poor Lofton would come down with a stomach bug....  oh well, the life of having kiddos :)

Lofton could not have been more excited.  When she walked in, she dodged my hug to go running to her brother, "It's baby Everett!  I'm so excited!"

Ready for Daddy to hand that baby over!

Easter 2013

We had a busy and fun Easter weekend.  So blessed to have lots of cousins living nearby to share the holiday traditions with.  On Saturday afternoon, we headed over to Gigi and Papa J's house where Lofton got to dye eggs (pink only), decorate a bunny cake (discover jelly beans), and hunt eggs (work on identifying her name).  Gigi was smart and knew that the "big" kids would clearly shine in the egg hunt department so all the eggs had their names on them.  This girl definitely knows the letter "L" and since none of her cousins share the starting letter, she did a great job!
On Sunday, I rounded at the hospital EARLY so that we could make the 8am service at church and then meet up with family for brunch.  On Sunday afternoon Mimi and Pop Pop (Dewey's parents) came over and brought a delicious ham and deviled eggs.  Note to self, L LOVES deviled eggs!  As expected the easter bunny not only visited our house, but also left a basket at each of the grandparents' houses.  Busy bunny!
Overall, we had a great weekend celebrating the gift of everlasting life that we have been given!

Don't know why some of these are so fuzzy... refer to facebook for better views :)

Celebrating E!

On February 23rd, we celebrated my little man with a beautiful brunch at Stonebriar Country Club.  Hostesses included my SIL's and great friends both new and old.  All the little details were to die for and we both felt very loved (and spoiled!).
The day did start out a little rocky, but of course is already funny.  L has really only had a fever one time that I can recall before this day.  However, on Thursday afternoon her school called to say that she had gotten sick and was running a low grade fever.  I picked her up and she was pretty cuddly and not eating much but otherwise seemed fine.  On Friday, she was about the same until 5 minutes after the pediatrician office closed and she was burning up-fever 104.6!!  Good grief.  We went to the pedi urgent care near our home and Lofton was diagnosed with strep.  We started antibiotics that night but her fever didn't break until about 3am, so we were up most of the night until that point.  I finally crashed with her only to be woken up at 6:30 by the hospital.  A patient of mine that was scheduled for a c-section the following week, had gone into labor and she needed surgery right away.  I woke up my poor partner and we headed to the hospital.  Good thing we both got into the dry bar to have our hair fixed later in the morning so we looked alive by shower time at 10:30 :)  And the best news is that by 9am, L was fever free and feeling great!  Love antibiotics.

who will this man look like?  L may have a little of me, but definitely favors the cute guy on the left.  all sono pictures look like E will follow suit.  clearly i have weak genes...
My partner, Cathy Holt, and our fab hair.  We both kept it up for about 3 days and our office was shocked when we walked in on Monday morning.  They're a little too accustomed to our haphazard, fixed this pony tail while driving look :)

Me and Mom (aka Gigi)

lifetime friends of my mother's.  they might as well be second mamas to me and i love them dearly.
I wish you could see this little guy better.  Harry is about as cute as they come and he was a GREAT helper with the opening of the presents.

Love this sign for E's room from my SIL Marti

They both stood by me when I married Dewey and now we've all had babies.  So fun to go through these phases of life together.

My mom and Marit.  She was hosting a dinner party (which was no doubt FABULOUS) that same evening in Conroe, but still made the trip down.  So sweet.

Joy!

Soaking up our numbered days of my little love being an only child.  We left Daddy at home to take care of a few Saturday morning things and headed to the mall for a "quick" trip of exchanging a few items and taking a carousel ride.  Of course things never go quite as planned so the exchanges took longer than expected, the mall was packed with spring break teenagers, and this pregnant mama went one too many hours without a snack or water and almost fainted on the carousel...  needless to say we didn't pick up lunch and eat with daddy as planned since i needed a stat boost from chick-fil-a :)  oh well, even though my arms were full of bags (i should really start taking a stroller) there was no better way to end the morning than by carrying my sleepy girl out with her head on my shoulder.
Lofton love, you are pure joy!

Snow Day 2012

Wow!  I have not blogged in forever.  I better start catching up now before we're a family of 4 and time is a little more limited :)

We had a beautiful Christmas snow this year.  However, we did not have proper snow gear at Gigi and Papa J's house, so we waited until the next day to go out.  Lofton had seen snow once before but she was an infant and was less than impressed.  This time she was SO excited!  She looked out the window in the morning and said, "Mom, there's snow at my house!  I want to touch it and build a snow man with an orange nose and run in it!!"  She had BIG plans.  We only lasted about 20 minutes due to the chilly weather, but she did get to run in it and touch it.  For days afterward she was shocked and distraught when she did not see any snow outside :(

Lastly, 22 weeks pregnant.  I can tell how far behind I am by looking at my bump in this pic and looking at it currently :)

Smith Family Christmas 2012

Holidays are so easy now that we all live in North Dallas.  Everyone gets to do Santa at their own house, sleep in their own beds, and still get together with family on several occasions throughout the holiday.  I love it!  This year was technically our year to be with the Smith family on Christmas, but because of close proximity we generally see everyone at some point.
We all met up after our Christmas Eve services (somehow we are so close but have all chosen different churches to call home) at Gigi and Papa J's house for a "light" meal.  Hmm.  Somehow a turkey, dressing, and broccoli/rice casserole jumped into our apps only meal :)  Regardless, it was delicious.  I have 2 brothers which seems like a fairly average family.  However, they are both married with 5 kids between them and my half-brother and his wife were in town, aunt/uncle, my MIL, and my SIL's parents all came on Christmas Eve so we had quite the crew.  Total of 16 adults and 6 (and a half for Everett!) kiddos.  Fun times.
On Christmas we took our time doing Santa at home and putting my very tired 2 year old down for an early nap.  We then headed to McKinney for Christmas lunch and family presents right as the snow hit.  It was slightly sleeting as we pulled out of our driveway, and when we arrived at my parents' 20 minutes later, it was a winter wonderland!  Not the greatest driving conditions but it was beautiful and SO fun to have a white Christmas!  We played, ate, opened too many presents, and had the Christmas story read to us by the oldest grandchildren (each on a bible app from their new electronic devices...kids these days!) before deciding to brave the drive before dark.
